Savings & financial planning

Savings planning starts with how much cushion you need, where cash earns yield, and how monthly habits map to goals. Calculators here use rates and amounts you type—they do not pull live bank APYs except on the separate rates page.

Rules like “three to six months of expenses” are starting points. Irregular income, dual earners, and insurance deductibles may push you higher or lower.

Emergency reserves

An emergency fund covers essential expenses if income stops. Define essentials narrowly (housing, utilities, food, insurance) rather than your full discretionary budget.

Cash in a high-yield account trades return for liquidity. CDs may pay more but lock funds unless you accept early-withdrawal penalties.

Budget frameworks

Needs / wants / savings splits help you see leakage. Actual spending from bank exports beats guessing. Adjust categories until the totals match reality, then set targets.

A budget calculator compares planned percentages to optional actuals; it does not link to your bank.

Goal-based savings

Goal tools solve for deposit size, timeline, or target balance given an APY assumption. Compounding frequency and tax on interest are usually omitted unless you model them.

College savings projections depend on cost growth assumptions that may exceed general inflation. Use a range of college cost increases.

Social Security illustrations

Benefit estimates on this site use simplified earnings histories. The official SSA statement includes your actual record and claiming rules.

Claiming at 62 vs full retirement age vs 70 changes monthly income and total lifetime benefits depending on how long you live—there is no single “correct” age for everyone.

Common questions

How much should I keep in cash vs invest?

Cash covers near-term bills and emergencies. Longer horizons historically favored diversified investing, with volatility. This site does not recommend an allocation—only tools to model cash growth.

Are high-yield savings rates guaranteed?

Bank APYs change with competition and policy rates. CD rates lock for a term. Enter the APY you see in an offer; it is not locked in the calculator unless you assume it is.

Does inflation make saving pointless?

Cash loses purchasing power when inflation exceeds after-tax yield. Emergency money still needs to be liquid. Match the tool to the question: inflation calculators for purchasing power, savings calculators for account growth.
