How this savings goal estimate works
Choose whether to solve for the deposit needed by a date or the time needed at a fixed deposit. Returns compound monthly; other deposit frequencies use an effective periodic rate so numbers stay aligned with the compound interest calculator.
Questions
- How is the deposit calculated?
- In deposit mode, the calculator solves for the periodic payment that grows current savings to the goal by the target date, using monthly compounding and an effective periodic rate for non-monthly frequencies. At 0% return, the deposit is simply (goal − current) divided by periods.
- What counts as an emergency fund?
- Many planners use a rule of thumb of three to six months of essential expenses — that is a guideline, not a rule from this site. The calculator does not know your expenses; you choose the goal amount.
- Where should short-term savings sit?
- People often use high-yield savings accounts or CDs for near-term goals. This page does not recommend specific products or institutions.
- Does weekly vs monthly change the total?
- More frequent deposits can reach the same goal with slightly different totals because of compounding timing. The engine uses the same periodic-rate helper as the compound interest calculator for consistency.
