How extra principal payments affect auto loans

What an extra principal payment changes on this auto loan schedule, and what it does not change.

Extra principal shortens the schedule

An extra principal payment reduces the unpaid balance. Later months then charge interest on a smaller balance. The schedule stops at zero, and the last payment is adjusted so the balance does not go negative.

Interest saved is the difference between that schedule and the same loan without the extra principal. Months saved are the payments you no longer make. The contractual payment itself stays the payment for the term you selected until the balance is gone.

A model, not a payoff quote

A servicer may apply extra principal on a different day, or may require a note that the extra is principal. This calculator applies the extra amounts you enter inside its monthly model. It does not contact a lender for a payoff.

What stays the same

The APR and the contractual payment do not change because you added extra principal. The balance falls faster, later interest is smaller, and the schedule ends sooner. Interest saved is measured against the same loan without that extra principal.

A longer term and an extra payment pull in different directions. One spreads the balance out. The other pays it down. The calculator can show both on the same vehicle.
