FIRE
Estimate a financial-independence number from spending and a withdrawal rate you choose.
$1,500,000
Sample FI number. Not a retirement plan. Not financial advice.
How this FIRE estimate works
Lean, regular, and fat use 0.7×, 1×, and 1.5× the spending you enter. The savings-rate table treats spending plus savings as income, then saves 10% through 70% of that income.
Questions
- What is the FI number?
- Annual spending divided by the withdrawal rate you pick (3%, 3.5%, 4%, or a custom rate). It is a planning target, not a promise that a portfolio will last.
- How are years to FI counted?
- The invested balance grows once a year at your return minus the inflation percent, then annual savings are added, until it reaches the FI number or 80 years pass.
- What is Coast FI?
- The balance today that could grow to the FI number by the coast age with no more contributions. If the real return is zero, that balance is the FI number itself.
